International Youth Art Festival Bitola Open City is an annual festival of alternative youth culture organized by Youth Cultural Center – Bitola.
The festival brings together artists of different background working in various media and with young people. It aims at communicating positive, multicultural values, and celebrating the richness of European countries’ cultures through music, theatre and the applied arts.
The festival is inspired by the need for: a new approach to the presentation of cultural values and trends; promotion of new open scenes; development of new cultural policy and management; openness for alternative art forms; and intercultural cooperation as an important segment of the new European cultural policy.
The annual program of the festival envisions a synthesis of authentic musical directions for alternative and rock, with lyrics that are socially driven and promote a positive message. The festival includes street art, rebellious in nature, and different street performances by groups of young people who represent the progressive trends in each city, as well as by amateur and professional art groups who perform their independent projects. These events are free of charge and available to a wide audience, turning the famous street Shirok Sokak in Bitola into a big art scene.
The creative workshops will strengthen contacts between young artists, NGOs and local community representatives, whereas evening parties and jam sessions will create a relaxed, festive atmosphere.
Undoubtedly, art is the best way to become open and to recognize the values of other nations and cultures. Contacts and intercultural presentations generated multicultural values and promotion of positive energy among the citizens of Bitola and wider. But the festival communicated an image of a nation with strong capacity for peace, tolerance and universal values.
Over 500 artists from 30 countries had participated on the festival. In previous editions we had artists from USA, France, Germany, Slovenia, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Spain, Japan, Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria etc.
Bitola Open City Festival is a generator of dynamics and positive energy, a bridge between cultures, and an evidence for youth capacity to achieve a real change.
